Paint, Ponder and Prose

I have been wanting to start a blog for a while now but wasn't sure how to begin. A recent conversation with a fellow artist, sparked something I thought worth talking about.

This fellow artist is a wonderful and talented painter in her own right. She doesn't see however just how talented she is. Moreover, she doesn't believe in herself....and that just saddenes me beyond belief. She told me (and I quote her..) that "I cannot seem to pigeon hole one thing....as a result, I have not mastered anything." Wow. When I read this, I was nothing short of stunned.....and very very sad.

Those words "I have not mastered anything." Why in the world would you wish to do such a thing, not only to your creative spirit, but to your soul? You have MANY talents. Celebrate that. Do not put yourself down for it. Tell me, what does "mastering" look like for you? You know what it means for me? It means I no longer need to learn. I no longer need to explore. I no longer need to go out on a limb. I no longer need to risk. And I no longer need the thrill of that creative rush. That creative surge. That creative gift that we get to open again and again when we create something new. Mastering something means the end of the journey. The end of the line. How boring is that? Very!

Give me the journey. Give me the artist's road. The way is paved with moments of frustration, yes..... but also joy.... Discover it that joy. Find it. Let it find you. Embrace it. Let it rise to meet you. The wonderful thing is our journey as artists. So what if you haven't "mastered" anything. I always thought the mark of a great artist is exploring new things. Taking chances with yourself....risk creatively!

To heck with being perfect.....The beauty lies in the imperfect.
